Ceramic Coating Prep: The Products You Need Before You Coat

Ceramic coating is one of the best investments you can make in your vehicle's paint — but only if the surface underneath is properly prepared. A coating locks in whatever is on the paint when you apply it. Contamination, swirl marks, water spots, and oils all get sealed under the coating if you skip prep. Here's the complete prep process and the products you need to do it right.

Why Prep Is Everything

A ceramic coating bonds directly to your clear coat at a molecular level. Any contamination, oils, or imperfections between the coating and the clear coat will compromise adhesion, reduce longevity, and potentially cause the coating to fail prematurely. Professional detailers spend more time on prep than on the actual coating application — and for good reason.

Step 1: Full Decontamination Wash

Start with a thorough decontamination wash using an alkaline pre-wash to strip waxes, sealants, and traffic film. Follow with a pH-neutral shampoo for the contact wash. You need a completely clean, bare surface — no existing protection layers that could interfere with coating adhesion.

Step 2: Iron & Fallout Removal

Apply an iron remover to the entire vehicle — paint, glass, and wheels. Labocosmetica SIDERO is ideal for this stage. Let it dwell until the purple reaction subsides, then rinse thoroughly. Iron particles left on the surface will be sealed under the coating.

Step 3: Clay Bar Decontamination

After chemical decontamination, clay the entire vehicle to remove any remaining bonded surface contamination. Run your hand over the paint in a plastic bag — it should feel completely smooth, like glass. If it still feels rough or gritty, clay again. This step is non-negotiable before coating.

Step 4: Paint Correction (If Needed)

If your paint has swirl marks, light scratches, or water etching, now is the time to correct them. A ceramic coating will not hide imperfections — it will enhance them. Use a dual-action polisher like the Maxshine MB15 Pro DA Polisher with a finishing compound like Rupes High Performance DA Fine Polishing Compound or Rupes Uno Pure for a swirl-free finish before coating.

Step 5: Panel Wipe / IPA Wipe-Down

After polishing, wipe down every panel with a panel wipe or isopropyl alcohol solution to remove all polish oils, dust, and residue. Labocosmetica VERITAS is a dedicated coating prep and polish wipe-out that ensures a perfectly clean, oil-free surface for coating adhesion. This is the last step before coating application — don't skip it.

Step 6: Apply Your Ceramic Coating

With the surface fully prepped, you're ready to coat. We carry several excellent options:

Maintaining Your Coating After Application

Once coated, maintain with a coating-safe shampoo and avoid automatic car washes. Use a ceramic quick detailer like PERFECTA SiO2 between washes to boost hydrophobics and keep the coating performing at its best.
