Paint Protection Film (PPF) and vinyl wraps are significant investments — and they require a different approach to washing and maintenance than bare paint. Using the wrong products or techniques can lift edges, cause discoloration, degrade the adhesive, or permanently damage the film. Here's how to keep your PPF or wrap looking its best for the long haul.
Why PPF & Wraps Need Special Care
PPF and vinyl wraps are sensitive to high pH chemicals, certain solvents, and excessive heat. Alkaline degreasers, citrus-based pre-washes, and high-concentration iron removers can all cause issues if used incorrectly or left to dwell too long. The edges of PPF and wrap are particularly vulnerable — high-pressure washing directly at edges can cause lifting over time.
Washing: What to Use
Stick to pH-neutral shampoos specifically formulated for wrapped or filmed surfaces. These clean effectively without attacking the film's surface or adhesive:
- Labocosmetica SATINO — Specifically engineered for matte paint, PPF, and vinyl wraps. Safe, effective, and finish-preserving.
- Detail Co. Soft Wash — A pH-neutral formula that's gentle on all film types while still cleaning thoroughly.
- Yum Wash — A versatile, high-lubricity shampoo that's safe for wrapped vehicles when used at the correct dilution.
Washing: What to Avoid
- Automatic car washes — The brushes and harsh chemicals used in tunnel washes will damage PPF edges and degrade wrap finishes over time. Always hand wash.
- High-alkaline pre-washes — Avoid strong alkaline pre-washes on PPF and wraps. If you need a pre-wash, use a pH-neutral option and keep dwell times short.
- Citrus degreasers — Citrus-based products can attack the adhesive layer of vinyl wraps, especially at edges and seams.
- High-pressure directly at edges — Keep your pressure washer wand at least 12 inches from any PPF or wrap edges and avoid directing the stream directly at seams.
Decontamination on PPF & Wraps
Iron fallout and tar still accumulate on PPF and wraps and need to be removed periodically. Use a dedicated PPF-safe cleaner like Labocosmetica LIMPIA — a professional deep cleanser specifically formulated for PPF, wraps, and coatings that resets and revitalizes the surface without causing damage. For tar spots, use a dedicated tar remover applied carefully with a microfiber, avoiding prolonged contact with edges.
Protection: Coating Your PPF or Wrap
PPF and wraps can and should be protected with a ceramic coating or sealant to enhance hydrophobics, make maintenance easier, and extend the life of the film. Options we recommend:
- Labocosmetica ARMORIUS Matte & Satin Coating — Specifically formulated for matte PPF and satin wraps. Enhances the finish without adding unwanted gloss.
- Labocosmetica ARMORIUS Gloss Coating — For gloss PPF and gloss wraps. Adds depth, gloss, and long-term ceramic protection.
- G-Techniq EXOv5 — An excellent hydrophobic topcoat that works well over both PPF and coated wraps.
Drying PPF & Wraps
Always dry PPF and wraps with a soft, plush microfiber towel using light pressure. Avoid dragging towels across edges. The IGL PlushDry Drying Towel is an excellent choice — ultra-absorbent and completely scratch-free on sensitive film surfaces.
Maintenance Between Washes
Between washes, use a dedicated spray detailer safe for PPF and wraps to remove light dust and fingerprints. Avoid silicone-based detailers on matte or satin finishes — they can create uneven sheen. A ceramic quick detailer like Labocosmetica PERFECTA SiO2 is a safe option for coated PPF.
