Match the pad to the plate, then to the step
Pad diameter follows your backing plate — a pad that overhangs too far flexes and wastes throw; one that's too small exposes the plate edge. Once the size is right, choose by step: cutting pads carry the compound for defect removal, polishing pads refine, finishing pads set the last gloss before protection. A Rupes owner usually keeps two or three of each grade so a loaded pad never has to go back on the paint.
Pad care
Clean pads on the fly with a brush or pad-cleaning tool between panels, wash them after the job in a dedicated pad cleaner, and let them dry fully with the foam face up. A pad that goes back on the machine still damp cuts unevenly and throws product.
